For me, I can't play guitar through monitors, no matter how good they are. It's a question of the instrument's responsiveness, and the player's sensitivity to it. Put the same player in the audience, and he's no more reliable than anyone else.

When playing, however, the player can tell the difference immediately. It has been demonstrated that in a curtained test, violin dealers who handle Stradivari on a daily basis cannot correctly differentiate them from much lower-priced, but still high quality instruments. Be a great musician, not a great guitar player. The guitar magazine community was outraged! How dare Joey Santiago overturn the money changers tables!īe more like Joey Santiago.

I remember years ago in some guitar magazine Joey Santiago of the Pixies was interviewed and he basically was saying he didn't really care that much about tone and practicing, and considered himself to be exactly the guitarist he wanted to be and wasn't interested in making it the whole priority of his life. do you know, some songs don't even have any guitars on them? And that in some songs, the guitar is in a supporting role to the song itself? I swear to God! Look it up on Wikipedia! Apparently, it's supposed to add to the song sometimes! Garbage.īy the way, I haven't heard from anyone on this thread (including the guitar tone snob) anything about the God damn song. Most of the music I associate with that focus on "guitar tone" is crap anyway, your Steve Vai, your Yngwie, what have you. I mean, by all means take pride in your craft, but this whole "hands off my tone!" thing is just pure bullshit- born in guitar magazines and midwifed by guitar and amp manufacturers who have successfully marketed this instrument to a nauseating extreme. Who gives a shit- not any of the people who buy the music ultimately. Guitar tone snobs are among the most boring people on the earth, maybe second only to wine snobs or something.
